Background: The Youth Center is named for its founder. It has been serving Juneau's youth since 1950. During his lifetime, Zach Gordon received many awards and citations. Alaska's governor proclaimed May 22, 1973 "Zach Gordon Day," and the Rotary Club made Zach a Paul Harris Fellow. His small office was a picture gallery of young people from Southeast Alaska working in the arts, sciences, business, sports and law. Following his death in 1977, the Teen Age Club was renamed in his honor. Today the Zach Gordon Youth Center serves youth focusing on "at risk" youth with activities, counseling, meals, study times, a general "home away from home" atmosphere, health services, and other support.
The Project: The Youth Center must remodel its kitchen to meet state health standards and to more effectively serve its clients. This Rotary Grant proposal is for the purchase of commercial grade kitchen equipment. Purchases will include a refrigerator, stove, one piece prep since and counter, etc. Installation and other remodel work is being funded by the Rasmuson Foundation and the Zach Gordon Teen Club, Inc (a supporting organization). The project will be constructed after July 1, 2014 and before May 30, 2015.
Youth Impact: The Youth Center serves approximately 80 at risk students on an on-going basis with a full range of services as described above, plus other youth. The goal is to keep them healthy and to be successful students. Additionally, the Youth Center serves hundreds of youth as a drop-in activity center, special programs, and events.

How will Rotarians be involved? Rotary has recognized and supported the Youth Center, formerly the Zach Gordon Teenage Club, since the 1950's. In addition to the purchase of kitchen equipment, the Clubs plan to have Tri-Rotary construction and painting parties, and to help with other fundraising as needed to complete the remodel.
How will Rotary be recognized? First, the Tri-Rotary work parties will be good public relations photo ops for Rotary. Second, we will ask that a plaque with the Rotary symbol recognizing the support of Rotary be placed in a highly visible spot near the entrance.
