Summary: Enhancing the Rotary Park Pavilion as an environmentally themed fish and wildlife viewing area for residents and visitors, with interactive art, interpretive signs, maintenance, new picnic benches, a trail and other enhancements in Seward, Alaska.

Our goal is to transform Rotary Park in Seward (1121 Third Avenue) into a captivating recreational haven, inspiring visitors to cherish and safeguard the environment while fostering appreciation for the park's history, ecology, fish, and wildlife. This proposal marks the third part of Phase 1 for the Rotary Park Enhancement project (P-4187), building upon the initiatives commenced in 2022 and 2023 (Rotary Park Enhancement-1B- P-4619).

In Phase 1(A) ($10,000), initiated in 2022, we revitalized the Pavilion area to create an inviting wildlife viewing and picnic space. Although we couldn't secure funding for interactive metal art, significant enhancements were made, including the installation of artistic, educational signs, new Pavilion sign, new picnic tables, maintenance and graffiti removal.

Phase 1B, undertaken in 2023, witnessed substantial progress with the support of $10,000 from Rotary and $20,000 in additional grants and donations. Notably, an interactive metal whale art piece was created and installed, along with the installation of a memorial bench on a gravel pad. a peace pole donated by the Kino Rotary Club, a gravel trail was updated adjacent to the Pavilion and a land survey was completed.

Phase 1-C, ($5000), the focus of this proposal, seeks to advance the park's educational offerings and trail infrastructure. Plans include the construction of two interpretive signs. One ($2000) will provide an overview of Rotary Park with directions for hikers to access the park along existing roads from the Third Avenue boardwalk. The other sign ($1800) will detail instructions for operating the interactive whale while telling it's story. It would pay for data analysis of QR codes ($60) used for fundraising on the signs, pay for emptying of recycling at the park ($380) and pay for several wildlife boxes ($500) along the loop trail, and minor maintenance ($260). Additionally, we aim to explore the feasibility of establishing a trail around the lagoon in relation to private land boundaries.

Why pursue this endeavor? Enhancing Rotary Park aligns with community needs by fostering environmental stewardship, promoting wildlife conservation, and celebrating Seward's rich history. By creating an inclusive, educational, and recreational destination, we aim to engage both residents and visitors, bolstering the local economy and inspiring positive environmental action.

Project Costs: Phase 1A (2022/23): Completed at $10,000, funded through a district grant and matching club donation. Phase 1B (2023/24): Budgeted at $10,000, supplemented by $20,000 in grant funding and donations. Whale will be installed in September of 2024. Phase 1C (Complete by May 2025): Projected cost of $5,000, with funding split evenly between District 5010 and Seward Rotary.

Potential Future Work: Phase 2 (2025/26): Estimated at $28,000, focusing on trail development and permits.

Rotarians and community partners have been instrumental in project planning, soliciting art, designing signs, and contributing to habitat restoration efforts. With collaborative efforts and continued support, Rotary Park will evolve into a cherished and vibrant community asset, leaving a lasting impact for generations to come.
