Activity Type:
Peace: General
Summary: District 5340 members place 22,000 miniature American flags at gravestones in Miramar National Cemetery for Memorial Day.
Miramar National Cemetery located just east of Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar is a growing cemetery and currently has 22,000 graves or columbarium niches. There is currently no funding or support to conduct what is a traditional effort to place small American flags at the gravestones and the niches. This project will team with cemetery management to rectify that situation. Rotary District 5340 will solicit approximately 200-300 volunteers to place the flags on Saturday, May 25 in anticipation of Memorial Day on May 27 and will subsequently remove them on May 28. The flags will be stored at a facility at MCAS Miramar. This grant will fund procurement and shipment of the flags.
