Location: Juneau

Total Budget: $8,000

Area of Focus: Economic and community development

Activity Type: Community Development: Renovation

Summary: Benches surrounding new duck viewing pad, other safety features at Riverside Rotary Park, Juneau, AK

Riverside Rotary Park is maintained in part by the City & Borough of Juneau, and the Rotary Club of Juneau Glacier Valley. The park which bears our name is situated in the heart of the valley, in a high traffic area, and where the majority of young families live in Juneau. It consists consists of a pond full of ducks, playground equipment, picnic facilities, and our 911 Memorial. It's a popular park enjoyed by many, and offering a bit of something for everyone. Next month, we are addressing the bank erosion on the pond by installing a duck viewing pad, thus making it safer for small children. We would like to complete the project by installing surrounding benches, and other safety improvements pertaining to the new pad, and perhaps add a couple small pieces of playground equipment. Our club will have an active committee working to accomplish the improvements, and would have the improvements completed by May 2015. Upon completion we will send a PSA along with photos to the local newspaper. Thank you for your consideration.

Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)

The Juneau Glacier Valley Rotary Club received $4000 from the Rotary District Grant fund for FY 2015 (with our club matching, 8K is earmarked for the project), for the purpose of continuing improvements to Riverside Rotary Park, here in Juneau. On Feb 12, 2015, it was approved by the Regional Grants Officer, to re-designate our grant to the Zach Gordan Youth Center Kitchen Remodel project. The remodel project that is now underway. The Youth Center must remodel its kitchen to meet state health standards and to more effectively serve its clients.

The Juneau Gastinuea Club is utilizing their district grant (along with funds contributed by both Juneau Glacier Valley, Juneau Downtown Clubs, and other sources), for the purchase of much of the kitchen equipment. We have already committed to help with upcoming work parties for the project and will be volunteering our time (painting, and other appropriate projects). There will be club involvement when the time comes for sweat equity (from not only our club, but all 3 Juneau Clubs). Our club will be purchasing a ventilator hood/canopy, and fire suppression pad.
