Summary: Provide mechanical patient lift for Ride For Joy, providing hippotherapy to children in & around Boise, Idaho, USA

The Ride for Joy Therapeutic Riding Program is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that brings the joy - and many therapeutic benefits! - of horses to Treasure Valley children with special needs. Their goal is to expand this program to Wounded Warriors, Special Olympics, Idaho Autism Center, Idaho Autistic Mom's, ELKS, & the VA Hospital. To do so they must become PATH Certified (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship). This requires the purchase & installation of a mechanical patient lift as specified by the PATH accreditation. The approximate cost of the lift is $10,000. Rotary Club of Boise, Inc. requests $3,500 in district designated funds to put toward the purchase of the lift. Ride for Joy & Rotary Club of Boise will work to raise the remaining $6,500. Estimated completion date will be September 2015. Approximately 10 Rotarians may be dedicated toward this project. These individuals could assist with preparing the Ride for Joy facility for its PATH Premier Accredited Site Evaluation, preparing the policy & procedure manual, working on capacity building & outreach, & serving as side walkers & horse leaders.

Progress Report

Ride for Joy has raised the remaining funds to purchase the mechanical patient lift. They ordered the lift recently & expect it to be delivered/installed within 30 days. Upon delivery & installation, a group of Rotarians will visit the site, see the lift, & take photos for a final report. We hope for full completion by the end of 2014.

We’ve had some ongoing challenges with Ride For Joy. Their initial estimate for a new lift was $3,000. When we received the grant, they adjusted the estimate to $10,000. We held onto the grant money for a year as Ride For Joy raised the remaining $7,000. In September, they reported that they had completed fundraising, planned to install the lift in 30 days, & needed the grant money to purchase the lift. We released it to them. In the weeks that followed, our calls & emails went unreturned. We learned just recently that their Executive Director left the organization in November. The new contact disclosed Ride For Joy’s plan to move.

This project is completed. The chair lift was installed 4/13/15 & works beautifully! From an 80 lb boy to a 200 lb adult; the lift can handle the weight. With the new lift installed, riders that are wheel chair confined can now enjoy the benefits of the Ride for Joy program.

The benefits of being able to mount & dismount the horses is huge. It opens up the possibility of activities of therapeutic horseback riding for handicapped of all degrees.

The lift will be used for private and group sessions for the handicapped. There are many Veterans in the Wounded Warriors program that were excluded prior to lift installation.
