Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Loveland, CO

Total Budget: $11,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: Books mailed monthly to 532 at-risk 3 and 4 year old preschoolers in Loveland, Colorado

Thompson School District runs a network of 15 preschool sites in Loveland, CO. This serves mostly (85%) at-risk kids (language learning, low income, or health issues). Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is a program that negotiates a low price averaging $3.50/bookk and mails age-appropriate books each month to kids under age 5 if there is a county sponsor (for Loveland it is United Way of Larimer County). Also, the State of Colorado provides $1.75/book. This project is to provide funds for 532 kids x $1.75/book x 12 months = $11,000. Loveland Rotary Club Foundation is providing $5500 for this project. Total retail value of thse books is about $44,000.

ROTARIAN INVOLVEMENT: 1) We (the Literacy Committee of Rotary Club of Loveland) discussed with United Way of Larimer County their need for help in funding the Imagination Library project for Larimer County. We agreed that an appropriate role for Loveland RC would be to raise funds for the approximately 532 students (3 and 4 year olds) enrolled in the Early Childhood Centers of Thompson (Loveland) School District. At $21/year/student the total needed is $11,000. 2) In August 2023, our Rotary Literacy Committee visited many Back-to-School night events for Early Childhood Centers of Thompson School District to publicize the Dolly Parton Imagination Library project to teachers, students and parents, and to encourage parents to sign up all of their children under age 5. We found that they strongly supported the project! 3) In spring 2024 I submitted a Grant Application for $11,000 to the Loveland RC Grant Committee. We were awarded $5500 and were advised to apply for a District Matching Grant for the balance.

Dave,

I apologize for the delay in paying your grant. For the first time we received more grant requests than DDF was available. We cannot request the DDF till the report balances. To make that happen we have decided to cut the DDF from every grant. Your DDF request of $5,500 will be reduced to $4,950.

If you have any questions please let me know.

As of 8/3/2025 6597 children age 0-5 or 1.76% of the total population in Larimer County are enrolled in the Imagination Library. In Colorado, 85,010 children age 0-5 or 1.43% of that population are enrolled. So Larimer County has enrolled 23% more of its total population than the State of Colorado has. This entire grant has gone to United Way of Larimer County which is the sponsor of the Imagination Library program in Larimer County. This grant has focused in Loveland, Colorado (second biggest city in Larimer County). No data is available just for number of enrollees in Loveland.
