Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Fairbanks, AK

Total Budget: $4,000

Area of Focus: Economic and community development

Activity Type: Community Development: General

Summary: Sunrisers propose building a Family Friendly Pavillion in the South Davis Park Sports Complex in Fairbanks where youth and their families can get out of the elements, have picnics using barbeques while their children use the playground and sports fields.

The new South Davis Park Sports Complex consists of softball and soccer fields for use by area youth sports in Fairbanks, Alaska. In 2011-12 Sunrisers approached the FNSB Parks and Recreation Department about partnering on a community project that would benefit families with children and youth. In 2012-13 Sunrisers worked with Parks and Recreation to identify and plan a project to be implemented in 2013-14, based on needs identified by Parks and Recreation. Sunrisers completed the installation of a handicap accessible footpath and erected a playground swing set in May 2014. In 2014-15, Sunrisers Rotary will again partner with Parks and Recreation and a new partner, Fairbanks Youth Sports, to construct a covered pavilion where families can get out of the elements while using the adjacent sports fields and playground. The pavilion will have picnic tables with 2 barbeque(s) so families can enjoy the sports complex to meet a variety of needs from picnics, family gatherings or in support of their children's sports teams. The projected timeline for this project will be to prepare the site of the pavilion no later than October 2014, and have the pavilion constructed no later than May 2015. The project funds will be used for pavilion site preparation, design/permits, materials for installing sonotube footings, and materials for final D-1 surface and grading. It is anticipated that no less than 80% of Sunrisers Rotary Club members will be involved in the labor working with a local contractor, Johnson River Enterprises. It is anticipated that Fairbanks Youth Sports will fund the entire cost of the actual pavilion. In-Kind support from Parks and Recreation and Johnson River Enterprises is estimated to be between $10,000 and $12,000. Combined Club contribution and matching DDF contribution is expected to be at $4,000.

This project has been edited today. Sunrisers have received a donation from Fairbanks Youth Sports Foundation for the pavilion and playground pieces. In-kind help with the project will be provided by Johnson River Enterprises. Therefore our project will consist primarily of materials for site preparation in Fall 2014, picnic tables, and barbeques. With the DDF funds matched by the club, we will purchase these materials. All other costs will be covered by Snnrisers with funds raised as needed.

Now that the snow has melted, our project is underway again. Our project planners have been meeting throughout the winter, ordering the pavilion and playground pieces which arrived in January 2015. Recently we met to plan the layout of foot paths from the parking area. On 4/22/2015 we visited the site, took measurements and staked out the dimensions of the various footpaths and bore holes for the sonotubes for pavilion and playground pieces. On 4/23/2015 our club purchased 1200 feet of timbers. Once delivered our club members will install the timbers then add crushed rock.

Met today with Johnson River Enterprises to review the amended workplan for installing the foundation for the pavilion. There have been delays impacting the contractor due to recent unforeseen personal circumstances related to the Sockeye fire in Willow. Excavation needed to install and pour the concrete into sonotubes for the base/foundation of the pavilion will happen when he has equipment available from another job. Due to this minor delay, the timbers we purchased in late April for the laying the footpath have yet to be installed. Once we get the green light from the contractor, club members will be mobilized and the footpath leading to the pavilion will be installed and we can move on to the next phase of the project -- installing the actual playground equipment.
