Summary: Provide raised garden beds to local school, education and hands-on experience to children and their parents.
We frequently read about the nutrition deficiencies of today's young people. We propose to create a "community garden spot" at a school located close to low income and senior housing complexes. The objective would be to teach the children about growing food, nutrition, and preparing fresh vegetables. We would provide the raised boxes, growing medium (dirt), seeds and tools. We would engage the Co-operative Extension Service, a local greenhouse owner, and Rotarian gardeners and cooks to provide training. A part of the funding will also provide children's books to the school so that they can be used as part of the curriculum to familiarize children with benefits and techniques of gardening. The projected timeline is to build the raised planters, provide the growing medium, and purchase the books and educational materials before the start of the school year. In the spring, we will provide the plants and plant starting materials in order to plant the gardens as soon as frost danger has passed. Children and other participants could learn by starting the plants from seed beginning in March or April.
