Project Description

Country: Myanmar

Location: Mrauk Oo, Rahkine state

Total Budget: $2,000

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Maternal and child health

Activity Type: Health: Volunteer Services

Summary: Health education and disease prevention medication and health fair displays and information will be provided to people in 2-3 locations in Rahkine State. The displays will remain in Myanmar for future health fair needs.

The people of Myanmar/Burma are very poor and have essentially no access to medical care. An international team of medical professionals will provide health screenings and basic medicine treatments, and others will conduct health fairs for all the people waiting to see the medical professionals in December, 2014(a similar project provided health fairs to 1200 people in 2013/14). Based on experiences from providing health care and health fair information in December 2013, it appeared the people were unaware of basic health care knowledge such as the effects of smoking and alcohol use, healthy nutrition to prevent high blood pressure, diabetes and other disorders, appropriate sanitation, weight, height, pregnancy and fetal development, dental health, etc. The funds will be used to purchase equipment to screen for, and medications to prevent, hypertension and diabetes, and to treat pain and other common illnesses. Funds will also be used to purchase health fair displays which can be retained by the local monks and monasteries, and local individuals who can provide these health fair services in the future. Club members will be involved by helping to fund the Club's project and by keeping in touch with the activities of the Rotarians from other Clubs who are able to participate and to travel to Myanmar. Possibly a Club member may be able to volunteer to participate also. Ultimately this project will promote world understanding and goodwill, and advance the cause of peace in our world, and it will enhance the image of Rotary in a country that has not had a Rotary presence for generations.
