Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Soldotna

Total Budget: $4,500

Area of Focus: Water and sanitation

Activity Type: Water: Sanitation

Summary: To provide recycling containers at community events occurring by the Kenai River

Some type of recycling program currently exists in almost all areas of the Kenai Peninsula Borough year round. The Borough's level of involvement differs in each community dependent on degree of infrastructure and solid waste disposal methods. There currently is no recycling program for special events near or on the Kenai River. Through partnership with the Kenai Watershed forum, Soldotna Rotary Club would purchase enough recycling containers to be placed at various community events to ensure that our Kenai River area remains clean and unblemished by the thousands of people that swarm our community during our summer month events.

Item Quantity Individual Cost Total Notes

Recycling containers 15 $65 $975 includes lids, doesn't include shipping

Signage 30 $44 $1,320 includes graphic design for container and festival grounds signs

Shipping 1 $200 $200 Container shipping

Total: $2,495

We would like to utilize the District Funds to double the amount of recycle containers from 15 to 30. The Rotary logo would be featured prominently on the containers as well which will assist with Rotary International's goals with branding. The amount of people that will see that Soldotna Rotary Club cares about sanitation in our community will bring positive press to not just our own Club, but it will also bring recognition to our great District if we are able to match these funds.

Soldotna Rotarians will also participate in the placement, collection, clean up, and maintenance of the containers for their lifetime. This is a project that has a built in sustainability as well as involving Club members at regular, high profile events around the Kenai River.

Unfortunately we have yet to find a local source to buy them so they must be shipped in. The shipping more than doubles the cost.

The design process is in the works with Bounce Creative in Anchorage. We found that some of the graphics needed to be updated. We wanted to be very thoughtful about a highly visible and engaging design for overhead signage that was easy for volunteers to assemble but also sturdy enough to weather outdoor conditions.

We have decided that we will focus on the same events this year (Kenai River Festival, Progress Days, Kenai Peninsula Beer Festival, HEA Energy Fairs, etc). The bins have diverted 758 pounds of recyclables and 1000 pounds of compostables while educating thousands of community members on why and how to recycle.
