Micronesia is a much improvised area of the Pacific with substandard education facilities; often the schools are not much more than a hut to protect them from the intense sun. This includes the islands of Chuuk, Pohnpei, Kosrae, Yap and including Palau.
The books students use are those owned by the schools and are drastically out of date, in extremely poor condition and are used year after year for many years. It is rare kids have any book they can all their own.
We are funding dictionaries for 3rd grade students and simple picture books for the first and second grade students in Micronesia as well as dictionaries for 3rd graders in Poway Unified School District. We are estimating sending 1000 to 1500 books to Micronesia with the remaining staying locally. The contact and distribution of books in Micronesia will be administered by a Rotary Club located on the island of Guam. We are expecting everything to be completed by December 2011.
