The Valentine Community Garden was established in 2013. In its first year, all of the grow boxes were claimed. More requests for boxes have been received for boxes in 2014 and demand is increasing as people learn more about the Community Garden and how it works.
The second phase of the Community Garden Project is to expand the garden by adding 20 more growing boxes to the garden. The additional boxes will allow more people to participate in the Community Garden providing fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs for these families as well as allow a wider variety of plants to be grown. The new grow boxes will also provide more opportunities to teach both adults and youth in the area about: growing their own food, entomology, soil, nutrition, healthy eating, healthy lifestyles and teamwork.
The proposal is to build the new boxes in the fall of 2014 so they are ready for the 2015 growing season. Garden tools will be purchased as soon as feasible and be made available for late summer garden work, fall harvest and fall clean up of the garden. The estimated cost is $45/box for a total of $900. Additional garden tools such as rakes, hoes, wheel barrows, trowels, shovels, etc., are also needed at an estimated cost of $300.
Rotarians will provide labor and expertise in building and installing the grow boxes working in cooperation with the Community Garden leaders, participants and area youth.
