Description: Note that this is an increase to successful programs last year. We request a District Grant for $5,000 supporting a budget of $10,000 for the following purposes: 1. Food for low-income children's backpacks during the school year. The children are on meal programs during the school day, and the food would go to provide nutrition over the school weekends. Candidates for support would be vetted by the Boys and Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley through interviews and tax returns. The Boys and Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley is a 501(c)3 charitable corporation. Parents of the children are immigrants and would be required to attend no-charge classes in English and how to succeed in America (taught by the Boys and Girls Clubs) as a requirement for eligibility. Total Expenditures of $4500. This is an increase from last year's request, because we are starting to add pre-school children to the program. 2. A shoe the children event for about 150 children picked by the Boys and Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley in concert with Payless Shoes, who provide a discount for one pair of shoes. Total Expenditures of $2700. 3. Rotary Personnel teach a science class at Boys and Girls Clubs of Fountain Valley. Total Expenditure of $1,000 for robotic Lego toys and for a 3-D Printer, which will help to teach programming, general computer skills and Cad-Cam principles. 4. Holiday celebration for select Boys and Girls Club children, including gifts of home necessities and a picture of the child with Santa Claus. Total Expenditure for necessity items and photographs is $1200 All rotary personnel will be involved in purchasing, packing and handing out food, as will the Westminster Interact Club. Members will buy food and then be reimbursed out of club funds. Rotary members will be at each shoe store for item 2 above and will be handing out gifts and playing Santa at the holiday celebration. Our Rotary club is fortunate to have PHD's in physics and engineering who have volunteered to teach the science and robotics classes. Addendum: a. This project will start when the grant is funded. There will be no funding before then. The project will be completed, with a completion form sent, prior to the Rotary 2014-2015 fiscal end. b. Our Rotary club has funds on hand more than equal to the requested District Grant. c. A participation letter from Boys and Girls Clubs of Fountain Valley will be provided d. We have upgraded our website, and this project will be a key addition to it. In addition, we get coverage from the Orange County Register on many of our projects. e. No Rotarian or officer or employee of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Fountain Valley will receive any pay or personal expense reimbursement .There will be no operating expense reimbursement. This project will help with assimilating children and parents to the United States, will further their education and help alleviate hunger and poverty. Addendum 2: This is in response to questions asked on the above description: a. In the various parts of this project Rotarians are involved as follows: 1. In the backpack food program, all Rotarians in the club will be involved in packing the bulk food into separate bags for each backpack. When the Interact Club assigned to us is helping with the packing, there will be several Rotarians from the club supervising and helping out. These will rotate from week to week. At least two Rotarians will be used to pass out the food once per week. Four Rotarians will arrange and purchase food for the program and will be reimbursed by club or grant funds. 2. In the science education part of the product, 3 specific Rotarians, Messrs. Griffin, Xerikos and McCann (two rocket scientists and a University physics professor) will teach classes. Other Rotarians will help with the classes and monitor the kids as needed. 3. In the "Shoe the Children" part of the project, at least 2 club members will be at each of the 3 shoe stores helping kids try on the shoes and making sure order is maintained. Additionally, 4-6 Rotarians will be in charge of cooking (BBQ) and passing out food for the kids and their families after the shoes have been purchased.
4. At the holiday gift portion of the project, one club member will be dressed as Santa Claus and hand out gifts to each child. Additionally, about 10 Rotarians (members of our club) will hand out additional gifts, help with taking pictures of each child with Santa Claus, and provide general "crowd control." b. Start date for the programs: 1. The backpack food part will start in 10/2014 and end by 6/30/2015. 2. The science education part will cover the same time frame as above, but the money should be spent in the first month. 3. Shoe the Children will be a one-day event in February 2015. 4. The Holiday Gift portion will be a one-day event in December 2014. c. A letter of participation from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Fountain Valley will be uplifted to the documents section of the district grant website, project P344. d. Public Image Plan: We have recently updated our website, which will feature pictures from this project as a part of our recruitment plan for new members. In addition we have developed a relationship with the Orange County Register, as have the Boys and Girls Clubs of Fountain Valley. We will attempt to get them to do a piece on two competent local charities cooperating to further education and lessening of hunger.
