Project Description Country: USA Location: La Mesa, CA Total Budget: $1,000 Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy Activity Type: Education: Literacy Summary: Rotarians will read books to students in grades 1 - 3 in Title One schools in La Mesa, CA. & give the books to the students to take home. Literacy rates in Title One schools are very low. Students without reading skills are more likely to drop out, qualify for only low-paying jobs, can't help their own children to read, and the cycle of illiteracy continues to another generation. Adults reading to children provide a positive role model and share an educational experience. Improving the literacy rates of these children is one stp in breaking the cycle of generational illiteracy. Payment to Rolling Readers for $1020 sent March 23, 2012. ($520 La Mesa Sunrise Rotary Foundation, $500 District Literacy Grant) Marilyn Sanderson is working with the teachers to schedule dates to read to the children. Six La Mesa Sunrise Rotarians have volunteered to read to students. 26-Apr-12 System Entry Project has been implemented and final report uploaded. 27-Apr-12 System Entry Project reverted to 'Paid' status. 8-Jun-12 System Entry Project has been implemented and final report uploaded. 8-Jun-12 System Entry Final report approved by the District Approval Committee.
