Project Description Country: USA Location: United States Total Budget: $2,800 Areas of Focus: Basic education and literacy, Economic and community development Activity Type: Education: Literacy Summary: Calexico Family activity in Calexico is limited not only by economic factors (28% unemploymet) but by social/ethnic factors (85% 2nd generation border crossers). Many dependent on field worker wages. Children left with relatives while parents and siblings work. The Kiki Camerrano Library has quarterly activities for children and famiy members (manditory parent involvement) where reading, crafts, life experience are offered and atteded on average by 150 families for 3+ hours each session. Calexico Rotary club has committed $1,400 to be used by the library for purchase of books and supplies (each child gets to choose a book to keep every quarter). We are seeking matching grant funds for $1,400 to double the impact. Rotary members participate individally by reading to families and helping the library staff support the activity. A check will be sent to the Club at the address provided when the DDF cash is received from The Rotary Foundation. The District thanks and commends the Calexico Rotary Club for its generous project in the community. 5-Aug-14 System Entry Project sent for club signatures. 5-Aug-14 System Entry Project signed by Nelson C Baxley. 6-Aug-14 System Entry Project approved by the District Approval Committee. 24-Aug-14 System Entry Check for DDF payment issued by Foundation Treasurer. 17-Apr-15 by Nelson C Baxley Project updated April 17, 2015 Funds remain for 2015-2016 library year = $800 12-Jul-15 by Marge Cole Calexico RC returned $800.00 in DDF to the Rotary District Office in July 2015. These funds will be returned to The Rotary Foundation.
