Project Description Country: USA Location: San Diego Total Budget: $2,500 Areas of Focus: Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy Activity Type: Education: Literacy Summary: Books for Babies Chula Vista Sunrise Rotary has been instrumental in the success of Books for Babies in the San Diego area. A partnership was formed with the Greater San Diego Reading Association (GSDRA). With the help of the Rotary Club, GSDRA was able to buy backpacks or book bags with the Rotary International insignia and the names of both sponsoring organizations. Funds are also used to buy a minimum of three (3) children's books. Books are chosen by GSDRA for their appropriateness for young children and often are dual language; English/Spanish. Together with a note about the importance of reading to their newborns from early on and a free Parent/Family magazine, books are then delivered by members of both organizations to five (5) local hospitals. The Chula Vista Sunrise Rotary Club has enabled the Greater San Diego Reading Association to enlarge the project from three (3) to five (5) hospitals. Currently each hospital receives 20-25 book bags each. With a matching grant, Books for Babies could serve more families and continue to spread the word that Rotary International cares about literacy and the families of the newest members of our society.
