Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Arlington, Texas

Total Budget: $1,200

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: Provide Math and Reading material to enhance and support the H.O.P.E. After School Free Tutoring sessions in Arlington, Texas, U.S.A.

Arlington West Rotary Club members are Tutors and Directors of H.O.P.E.

Our grant will provide materials to support the Extended Reading Program and the Extended Math Program. The Grant money will be spent on the materials described below as soon as we receive funding.

These two free after-school programs enhance and support the After School Free Tutoring sessions.

The Extended Programs give an extra thirty minutes of math or reading to those students who need some extra help. Both programs will be one-on-one ( one volunteer to one student) and will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, before and after the regular tutoring session. Flyers are distributed to the parents and the volunteers. Extended Reading has been in place for the past 4 years and the materials are in need of updating and replenishing. Extended Math was new the second semester last year with few materials to use for the program.

H.O.P.E. endeavors to teach students to love reading and to feel confident with math skills. Our first priority is to help our youngsters gain the feeling of success by giving them a variety of learning materials and learning situations. The original Extended Reading Program materials are well-worn and need to be replenished and updated. Now that H.O.P.E. knows the need for the extra math support, good learning materials are required. Some of these materials may be used to help support the summer programs.
