Summary: Funds to support a running club in a school with the highest obesity rates among school children in San Marcos, CA- USA
Alvin Dunn Elementary School in San Marcos, CA has been identified as having the highest rate of obesity among school children in the area. Obesity can lead to serious health issues: diabetes , heart problems, and lethargy that hinders children from learning. Our club needs additional funds for t-shirts, medals, and other incentives to keep children involved in the program and, in some cases, running shoes. Club members have volunteered to bring together local college track team members to teach students about: warm-ups, stretching, running techniques that prevent injuries. Club members have volunteered to run, and or supervise some runs.

The matching District grant helped Route 78 Rotary sponsor a running club to address the high rate of obesity among students at Alvin Dunn School in San Marcos. Teachers organized “Running to Lead” providing students an opportunity to run 2 days a week before school. Student participation increased from 20 in the previous year to over 400 students (K -6th grade). An added benefit was that, off and on, about 40 parents exercised with their children. Having money to purchase incentives for students in the program, such as: ribbons, medals, t-shirts (after 20 miles), and award ceremonies kept students motivated. The matching grant increased awareness of health issues among children and that of our Rotary Club amongst the Latino community.
