Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Pocatello, ID

Total Budget: $2,458

Areas of Focus: Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy, Economic and community development

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: Building a Born Learning Trail to promote health and school readiness for children in Pocatello, Idaho

PROJECT DESCRIPTION & HOW IT MEETS NEEDS:

The Portneuf Rotary Club seeks funding to build a Born Learning Trail — an interactive trail containing 10 signs with instructions for simple games that an adult can play with young children to turn a trip at the park into fun learning moments. Some stations have additional enhancements such as hopscotch, or shapes and letters on the trail way. This is an activity proven to enhance child literacy skills and it gets kids physically active outside.

NEEDS:

Low Child Literacy Rates — 55.8% of children entering Kindergarten in Pocatello Chubbuck School District 25 are not testing at benchmark for literacy. Schools must focus on those children during the school year to bring them closer to grade level reading skills. In the summer, most children lose ground and 26% aren't reading proficiently at the end of third grade—an important predictor of high school graduation.

Childhood Obesity — Nearly a quarter of the children in Idaho are overweight or obese. The trend is that those numbers will grow.

TIMELINE:

The trail build takes 1 day, with some prep work the day before.

USE OF PROJECT FUNDS:

Funds will be used to purchase the ten signs and lumber and hardware supplies to build a Born Learning Trail.

CLUB MEMBER INVOLVEMENT:

Club members will do 100% of the work on the project.

District grant projects are limited by The Rotary Foundation to two years in length. The check from the district to fund your project was issued in December 2014. Your final report is now four months overdue, putting the district and all 42 clubs in jeopardy of not being able to receive Rotary Foundation grants for up to five years. I have audited this project. I do not approve it. You spent $729.21 and the District Foundation check was $1,239.00. You need to send a check for $509.79 to the District Foundation. Once you submit the check and change the original project funding request to $729.21, I will approve this project. Then mark this project submitted.

16-Aug-17

by Marianne Barker

The projected financing in this application no longer applies. The total project amount, as documented by receipts, is $729.21. The entirety was funded by DDF, and the club returned $509.79 to the district in June 2017.
