Project Description Country: USA Location: San Diego, California Total Budget: $5,585 Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy Activity Type: Education: Literacy Summary: Providing new books to students in grades 1 to 3 at Cesar Chavez Elementary, who are read to weekly by club members. This is an ongoing program, which has been in existence since 1988. It is the flagship program of the club's school partnership activities. It has been recognized by Phi Delta Kappa, a professional education association, with it's "Kappan Community Award" and July 30, 2013 was designated as "Rotary Readers at Cesar Chavez Elementary School Day" by the San Diego City Council. This year the program served twelve classrooms, reaching over 355 children from low and moderate income families, the highest number in the history of the program. Annually the program funds the cost of purchasing hard cover books, which are given to each student served. Teachers have told us that, in many instances, the books we give these students are the only ones they own. Funds will be used to facilitate the book purchase. PLEASE NOTE: The total budget includes books purchased for 4th and 5th grade classes, as well. A check will be sent to the Club at the address provided when the DDF cash is received from The Rotary Foundation. The District thanks and commends the Rotary Club of San Diego for its generous grant for Chavez Elementary School. 6-Aug-14 System Entry Project approved by the District Approval Committee. 24-Aug-14 System Entry Check for DDF payment issued by Foundation Treasurer. 12-Mar-15 by Dick Troncone Books for this project are not purchased, for the end-of-the-school-year giveaway, until May or June. Presently the Rotary Readers are checking with their respective teachers, to agree on appropriate books. 20-Jul-15 System Entry Project has been implemented and final report uploaded. 20-Jul-15 System Entry Final report approved by the District Approval Committee.
