Project Description Country: USA Location: La Mesa, CA Total Budget: $1,400 Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy Activity Type: Education: Literacy Summary: Books provided to first, second and third grade students in two Title 1 elementary schools in La Mesa, CA. La Mesa Sunrise Club members will read the books to students and give each child a copy of the book. Literacy rates in all of San Diego County are low, and many students don't have any books in their homes. By reading to children and giving them the book to take home, it can begin to change the cycle of illiteracy. La Mesa Sunrise Rotarians will schedule times with the teachers involved, read the book to the class, and then give each student their own copy of the book. Books distributed at 10 San Diego Unir 2015fied School District elementary schools by La Mesa Sunrise Rotary Club members and Words Alive volunteers in November 2014.
