Project Description

Country: USA

Location: El Cajon

Total Budget: $20,340

Area of Focus: Water and sanitation

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: The Water Conservation Garden will develop a new demonstration garden that will serve as a model for the community in the creation of water-wise habitat gardens, especially for butterflies native to San Diego County.

The Water Conservation Garden is dedicated to promoting water conservation in the southern California landscape through excellent exhibits and programs that educate and inspire the public. The Garden, established in 1999 to address the drought, is once again playing a leadership role to educate the community about water-wise living in the current drought conditions. Creating sustainable habitat gardens in our environment that support native flora and fauna is critical to maintaining a healthy ecosystem. The 4000 sq.ft. Habitat Garden will include local native plants that attract butterflies and other native species, a mini amphitheater for children's classes, demonstrate the use of recycled/rain capture water to feed a small grove of native trees for shade and informative interpretive labels demonstrating how to create a habitat garden.Scientific research to determine if the public and the professional horticulture community will adopt the use of this type of garden for public spaces and residential gardens will be conducted in collaboration with local university researchers and students. Beneficiaries served include K-12 children especially form low income families, homeowners, college students, garden clubs, scientific researchers and landscape professionals. The project will take 6 months to complete once all funding is secured. The total project budget is $49,688 of which $25,340 has been received ( $5,340 El Cajon/Rancho San Diego Rotary, $20,000 Helix Water District). Funds will be used for construction materials to build amphitheater for education programs, interpretive labels, pathways, plants, grey water system and irrigation components. A member of the El Cajon Club , Cheryl Minshew, is on the Board of The Water Conservation Garden and Club members can also be involved by volunteering for the project. A naming opportunity for the Habitat Garden is also still available for the major donor. All donors will be recognized for their gifts with professionally designed signage displayed prominently at the public entryways to the Habitat Garden. All donors will be invited to a VIP ribbon cutting ceremony that will precede the public opening.
