Lakeland Elementary is a campus in Lewisville Texas with a population of approx. 850 students. The campus as an 89% rate of students on free or reduced lunch and are considered a Title 1 school and most students are considered at risk. Approximately 70% of the students are considered English proficient with the majority of those from Spanish speaking countries and over 100 Burmese refugees.
The school has adult mentors, and high school students who mentor these students on a regular basis throughout the school year. The Lewisville Noon Rotary would create the Rotary Reading Center that would be a place that students could read amongst their fellow peers or mentors in a fun environment. Our club would engage with the students and Reading Lounge by becoming actively involved with the campus to encourage literacy for every student. We will actively be working with the Principal and Librarian to continue the objectives of the Rotary Reading Center and how fellow Rotarians can continue to enhance literacy at Lakeland Elementary.
The breakdown of the project would be as follows: $1000 would be for the purchase of books to Follett Library Resources and $2000 of furniture would be purchased through IKEA. This project would be ongoing not only for this year but years to come.
Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)
Lewisville Noon Rotary has coordinated with the Lakeland Elementary School Principal and Librarian to ensure that the project is properly scoped and is sustainable as designed. The Principal and Librarian have high hopes for this project.
