Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Encinitas, CA

Total Budget: $2,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: A total of 60 Digital Books with simultaneous use licenses (30 for each school) will be provided to K-3 students at two Title I Schools in Encinitas, California

The Rotary Club of Encinitas has a long history of supporting literacy projects in the two Title I Schools in Encinitas. These two schools, Capri Elementary and Paul Ecke Central Elementary, are in federal program improvement. At both schools, the students who are living at or below the poverty level and English learners did not make the required academic gains in English language arts. With the new Common Core State Standards requiring greater rigor, a focus on informational text, and new digital literacy goals which call out the importance of digital reading, the Encinitas Rotary wants to provide the literacy tools to assist these students in building the necessary skills for them to achieve academic success. In addition, UCSD is partnering with each of these schools to provide afterschool classes in engineering to 5th and 6th grade girls for the next three years. With this emphasis on science and engineering, the Encinitas Rotarians want to help prepare these students in the primary grades to have a stronger foundation in literacy through the science content area. The digital books will be purchased by September 30th and will remain the property of the Encinitas Union School District in perpetuity. Every student K-3 (approximately 350 students at each site) will have access to the purchased high interest science books. There will be a focus on purchasing books that are interactive. The books will be able to be used simultaneously; so all K-3 students can access the same title at the same time, if desired. This will allow for 1-to-1, small group and full classroom use. This will help build academic language along with an increased incentive to read because of the high interest topics that are addressed in the books. Since the books are digital, students will be able to take the books home through iPads provided by the school district. This will allow parents to participate in the reading and interactive content of the digital books. Encinitas Rotarians will be offered training by reading specialists from the Encinitas Union School District on techniques to maximize the use of these digital books and invited to work one-on-one with students and parents through student tutoring and parent education events. A "Rotarians at Work Day" project will be linked to the implementation of these science books.

The Literacy Through Science grant has almost been completed. All of the e-books have been purchased and activated for student and teacher use. All of the books purchased were science oriented and gender balanced. The books have unlimited use permissions, so all K-3 students can check out the books at the same time. As a culminating event we will be taking the Encinitas Rotary President to Paul Ecke Central School to see the students actively using the e-books. This project has inspired the school district to seek out other opportunities to acquire e-books because of their functionality and the student engagement they have fostered.
