Summary: Industrial strength washing machines for orphanage dormitories in Tijuana, Mexico
Hogar Infantil La Gloria is a 35-year old orphanage providing a home (love, care, shelter, food) for 40-50 orphaned, abused, neglected, and abandoned children in Tijuana, Mexico. Recent projects have focused on upgrading facilities, which are in dire need of repair and operating beyond capacity. A top priority is the purchase of new industrial washing machines which are needed to replace the five household washers and three household dryers which need near constant repairs due to over-use. Laundry is a non-stop endeavor for Hogar Infantil staff - from the washing of mandatory school uniforms, to sheets, towels, etc. laundry machines run all day, every day - and for which household machines are not built to sustain. Laundry is both a hygiene requirement in a childcare/living scenario, as well as a practical and educational necessity - children in Mexico cannot attend school without a uniform. Much needed funds are being diverted to the repair of these machines, and all are nearing the point at which repair is not possible. In past years, Hogar Infantil has averaged 1-3 years for the household washers and dryers it purchases through available channels. The requested grant will be used to locally purchase 3 industrial grade (35-lb) washing machines at approximately $2,000 each. The machines are refurbished to maximize funds, but come with extended warranties. If ongoing negotiations with the vendor(s) prove to be even more successful, a dryer will also be purchased as funds allow. The fact that the machines are purchased locally (as opposed to in the U.S.) also means better access to repair services and also that much needed funds are injected into the local Tijuana/Mexican economy. The project can be completed within 60 days of funding.

Due to supplier issues in procuring refurbished washing machines in Mexico, a delay has occurred in obtaining said washers. Because obtaining high quality refurbished washers is the ultimate goal that will serve Hogar Infantil for years to come, grant sponsors at the Del Mar Rotary Club have agreed to let Hogar Infantil continue to try to obtain them for a little bit longer. This said, sponsors have been pushing strongly for a resolution to include contact with the orphange director and suppliers to urge a more timely response.
