It has been determined that early introduction to reading of non-fiction books to pre-school and kindergarten students enlightens the child and promotes interests in reading and develops a pattern that benefits them in their later years. Many school libraries do not have the funds to grow their library of books for this age group. Those that do, the books are typically older and not as current.
We would like to provide funds to two schools in our area, Felicita Elementary and Juniper Elementary. The student makeup in each of these schools is dominated by low income families. The makeup of these schools in aide provided are as follows:
- Felicita School: 775 students;84% free lunch, 12% reduced lunch
- Juniper School: 761 students, 78% free lunch; 11% reduced lunch
Each school also has a high majority of Hispanic children many of which, English is not their first language at home. Their makeup is:
- Juniper is 89% Hispanic and 66% English Learners
- Felicita is 94% Hispanic with 70% English Learners
The schools API are 762 for Juniper and 690 for Felicita. Anything below 800 needs a corrective action.
Early access to reading will greatly improve these children chances of doing well in the later years of school.
We are looking to provide $3000.00 per school to assist them in purchasing these books.
The average cost of a hard cover book is approximately $19.03 and that of a paperback is $7.38. This funding, of $3000 for each school would purchase approximately 230 books for each school, assuming 50% hard cover and 50% paperback.
We would work with both the Escondido Union School District Foundation and teachers at each of the schools to insure the correct books are purchased. Our contacts are:

- Juniper Elementary School: Cliff Smith csmith@eusd.org 1809 South Juniper St. Escondido, CA 92025
