HOW PROJECT MEETS COMMUNITY NEEDS—

(1) The "Books and Bags for Moms and Babies" project has been ongoing for over 3 years. We will provide print resources for parents of newborns, both for the care of babies and for the reading foundation parents need to provide for their children even when children are still infants. Because many low-income families do not have print resources to use with their small children, the Buena Park Rotary Club will send parents and newborns home from the hospital with a small drawstring tote bag with an iron-on "Buena Park Rotary" label on the front. The bag will contain: a Parent medical and informational resource book that will give parents authoritative advice on all aspects of infant care; information about local school districts and libraries; and more importantly, interactive books written in English and Spanish for new parents to read to their babies as soon as they get home from the hospital. With these resources, the Buena Park Rotary Club will equip parents to begin the reading-readiness process.

(2) The "Books to Grow on" project will have two aspects and will take place in conjunction with the Buena Park Library.

•This special district library (which is not subsidized by city or government funding) has many literacy programs including early literacy story times serving babies, toddlers, and preschoolers. In the story times, effective read-aloud and interaction techniques are modeled for the mothers and fathers of the children. Our Rotarians will hand out free books to young preschool children during the year as a reward for attending the Infant/Toddler/Preschool story times.

•Many low-income families in northern Buena Park don't have day-time transportation means to get to the library with their children. The Buena Park Rotary Club supports the ongoing Pop-Up Library program at a local low-income neighborhood park near a school where children are read to by volunteers including Rotarians, and they and their parents are allowed to borrow books without fear of being fined. (Rotarians have helped arrange this program which the BP Library has begun in the summer of 2014.) Rotarians will purchase and hand out books to be given away over the course of several months during the school year.

(3) Children who learn to love reading have gotten a good foundation at home and in preschool or Kindergarten. Supporting the teachers of preschool and Kindergarten classes so that they can purchase books suited to the level of the children and the subjects they are teaching is essential. Buena Park Rotary will adopt one Pre-K or K class in each of the two districts: Buena Park School District and Centralia District, and purchase books for their Pre-K or K students. Rotarians will also volunteer to read in the classrooms and hand out books.

TIMELINE—

(1) "Book and Bags for Moms and Babies" - During the fall months of 2014, BP Rotary project partners (at least 10+ Rotarians, 10+ Rotaractors, 10+ Acacia Quilt Guild members and 10+ Buena Park Woman's Club members) will make, string, and stuff the 280 drawstring bags: 2 local school districts will be contacted for their materials; 280 LA Times free Parent Resource Guides will be ordered; 280 "Your Baby's First Year" parent resource books and 280 bilingual English/Spanish baby board books will be ordered. When the bags have been completed and stuffed, Rotary members will begin delivering bags to local hospitals for them to be distributed to parents of Buena Park babies. At city events beginning in the fall of 2014, Rotary members will volunteer to meet new parents and distribute bags to them, telling them about the benefits of reading to their babies. Each month from November 2014 through April 2015, Rotary members will contact the hospitals (La Palma and St. Jude), the Buena Park WIC center, and Moms of OC in order to deliver more bags as they are needed.

(2) "Books to Grow On" - Mary Ivelia, the Youth Services Librarian at the Buena Park Library, will collaborate with the BP Rotary Club to choose and order appropriate preschool books. Rotarians or Rotaractors will participate in giving out books to young preschool children as a reward for attending the Infant/Toddler and Preschool story times. This program will support 130+ children and their parents during the year. Pop-Up Library - The Buena Park Library personnel led by Stella Galvan, Outreach Coordinator, will continue providing story times at a local park, with Rotarians and/or Rotaractors volunteering to read as well. Rotarians will provide books and hand them out over the course of several months. This program will impact at least 55 children and their siblings and families.

(3) Supporting two Pre-K and K classes - Buena Park Rotary will provide funding for teachers of 2 Pre-K or K classrooms to select books to be given to the 60+ children. During Read Across America and other times, Rotarians and/or Rotaractors will read to the classes and hand out books to the children.

Articles will be written by Rotarians to highlight the success of these projects and submitted to local news organizations, posted on our BPRotary website (www.bprotary.org), and sent in to District 5320 news.
