Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Santee

Total Budget: $2,287

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: Third Grade Dictionary Project

The Santee-Lakeside Rotary Club has less than 20 members and services two communities. With limited resources, the Club is struggling to do the projects it wants to do. The Santee-Lakeside Rotary Club has traditionally participated in the 3rd Grade Dictionary Project, but last year it couldn't afford to do so. The Club would like to submit this grant request to allow us the opportunity to provide dictionaries to all 3rd graders in both the Santee and Lakeside School Districts. Santee has nine schools and Lakeside has 5, totalling 14 schools in all.

We typically order 1200 60 Spanish dictionaries, although the final numbers are based on enrollment figures for each of the schools. Each dictionary costs $1.49 each, tax is at 8% and we order labels for each dictionary with the 4-Way test and Rotary's logo. We'd like to submit this matching grant to cover the purchase of 1300 dictionaries. Cost of dictionaries: $1,937.00. Tax would be 154.96; labels: $195.00 with a total cost of $2,286.96 rounding up to $2,287.00. The Club would pay half.

This grant is still open due to a request from the school districts to substitute apps for teh dictionaires. The app they want has now been identified and we are awaiting teacher counts so that we can buy the applicable licenses. If any funding remains, we will be purchasing books to donate to the school libraries.

Both the Santee School District and the Lakeside School District requested that we reconsider donating dictionaries in lieu of their request for purchase of an iPad app that teachers are wanting to use. 3rd graders now have iPads and they felt the app would be beneficial to the students since they can now access a dictionary online. The app which still support Literacy is called Nearpod. Nearpod aligns with Common Core and promotes engagement.
