The Boys & Girls Club of San Dieguito's Center for a Healthy Lifestyle has designed a garden-to-table learning program for the youth of North County. The Encinitas Coastal Rotary Club would like to support their efforts to fight childhood obesity and diabetes and improve the nutrition of the many at-risk students they serve. The students will learn practical skills and receive vocational training as they grow and prepare healthy food. The garden and kitchen will also be available for the entire community to enjoy healthy cooking classes and garden education. The new facility will provide classes for middle school & elementary school students in the areas below:
Nutrition Classes
Youth Culinary Academy
Health Counseling
Arts & Crafts
Gardening Classes
Cooking Classes
Vocational Classes for Youth
The new kitchen has been completed, but many outdoor teaching spaces and support areas for the half-acre organic garden are in desperate need of funding. The Encinitas Coastal Rotary plans to undertake a hands-on project (involving digging, planting, carpentry and painting) developing some of the following areas, starting in September of 2014:
Covered Picnic Area (10,000 - Partially funded)
Orchard (2,000)
Garden around the Fountain (500)
Three Sisters Garden (500)
Outdoor Amphitheater (3,000)
We hope to be instrumental in funding the materials for these areas, as well as some other essential elements like picnic tables (350 ea), benches (200 ea) and sheds (5,000 ea). And, we will secure naming rights to one or more areas of the garden, leaving our "mark" so that many generations of students will know that the Encinitas Coastal Rotary reached out to make a difference in their community.
We respectfully request matching funds from the District in the amount of $3,000 to undertake this project.
