Vista Unified School District graduates 59.1% of its students which is lower than the 70% national average. Research shows a significant correlation between poverty, ELL status, and low student performance.
Even when parents can be at home afterschool, they often are too busy taking care of pressing household needs, to be able to work with children on their school needs. Many of these children also live in families where the parent's level of education or understanding of the English language may not be adequate to help their kids with school work.
Rotarians and additional volunteers have been procured to distribute books and read to 2 classrooms during the 2011-12 school year at Maryland Elementary. The Rotary Club of Vista is committed to supporting this literacy initiative. The Vista Unified School District, Dr. Joyce Bales, is a Rotarian, and supports this project at all Title I schools in Vista.
