The Rotary Club of La Mirada will work with local churches and schools in the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District during the Fall of 2014 to identify 42 students in need of new, warm clothing. On December 10, 2014, approximately 40 Rotarians, spouses, public safety personnel and other community volunteers will host the needy students during a Holiday Shopping Spree at Marshalls Department Store, which will open early for the special event. The group is anticipated to include 15 Rotarians, six spouses and 20 community volunteers. Each of the 42 students will receive approximately $125 in shoes, jackets, pants, shirts and other personal items they need. The new, warm clothing is expected to enhance the children's attitude in the classroom through a greater sense of self-confidence and personal comfort during the winter season. Students will also be taken by bus to The Palms Retirement Community where they will receive individual presents and take part in an intergenerational holiday party with senior citizens living in the facility.
The Rotary Club of La Mirada is a comparatively small club with 21 members. In is anticipated that 15 Rotarians members will attend the Holiday Shopping Spree at Marshalls. Numerous spouses, grown children and friends are also expected to come to the event. In addition, Rotarians are also expected to be joined by approximately 10 to 15 prospective members, Sheriff's Deputies, City personnel and other community volunteers. Women who are members of the La Mirada Ebell Club will also be invited to assist with the project. In advance of the event, a number of Rotarians will participate in event planning and arranging logistics.
Rotary volunteers at the Needy Children Shopping Spree will help young children select clothing items from lists of needed items supplied by their parents. Rotarians and other volunteers will go through the store's checkout process with each child. The store will keep a running tally on the purchases, and the Rotary Club will pay for the purchases at the end of the event with a single check. Members will also purchase and wrap in advance the gifts to be distributed to the children at the holiday party. Rotarians will contact local churches and schools involved in the project, arrange for City bus transportation and an appearance by Santa Claus, and coordinate refreshments for the holiday party. Rotarians will also work at the club's Fireworks Booth during July to raise funds used on club projects throughout the year. Approximately 42 needy children and their families are expected to benefit from the Shopping Spree at Marshalls. In addition, approximately 30 seniors living at The Palms Retirement Community will enjoy the holiday party held at their facility following the Shopping Spree.
This project is expected to provide financial and emotional support to approximately 42 needy children and their families in La Mirada. The program will also benefit dozens of senior citizens living in The Palms Retirement Community in La Mirada. In past years, some of the children involved in the project have received their only holiday presents during the Rotary event. The positive attention and support provided to the students may also benefit the students' classroom performance.

It is anticipated that several individuals living and working in the community will have a first encounter with Rotary during this project, and that several will express interest in learning more about Rotary after participating in or reading about the project.
