Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Twin Falls/Magic Valley

Total Budget: $21,169

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Maternal and child health

Activity Type: Health: Disease

Summary: Provide Equipment for new dental clinic at The Wellness Tree, a 501(c)(3) corporation, which provides free medical care for low-income and uninsured members of the Twin Falls community.

1. Identified Needs: There is no free dental clinic in Twin Falls. According to a 2011 Idaho Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey, 53% of Idaho residents in Health District 5, which includes Twin Falls, have no dental insurance. A 2009 Idaho Smile Survey reported that 67% of Idaho 3rd graders had experienced dental caries and 22.5% of 3rd graders had untreated tooth decay. The Twin School District reports that 59% of its students receive federally-subsidized lunch. The purpose of the dental clinic is to decrease the number of people seeking dental treatment in hospital emergency rooms and to link high-risk populations to preventative and restorative care.

2. Meeting the Needs. Blue Lakes Rotary Club has partnered with The Wellness Tree to establish a dental component to the clinic's medical services. This project was chosen by a vote of the club membership as its 2014-15 focus. Blue Lakes Rotary Club assigned the money needed for this project from its recent annual fundraiser, and club volunteers are working with The Wellness Tree to raise the funds for the remaining equipment -- through grants and individual, organizational and corporate donations -- not purchased by the Rotary Club. This grant application is for the purchase of dental equipment (see Henry Schein estimate). Many club members will volunteer their time once the clinic is established, including 3 member dentists and another dentist who is a member spouse. The executive director of The Wellness Tree estimates a return of $50 in value for every $1 donated to the organization due to its reliance on volunteer hours and donated equipment and supplies. Equipping the dental clinic will meet community needs for many years to come.

3. Timeline: The dental clinic at The Wellness Tree will be 100% operational no later than June 1, 2015.
