The Ocean Institute is pleased to participate with the San Clemente Sunrise Rotary Club with their upcoming project to support one Adopt A Class Field Trip for the upcoming 2014-2015 school year. This project will support students from Las Palmas Elementary School for a Living Systems Lab and Cruise field trip.
This project will help support the Adopt A Class program's mission to ensure that any student who wants to participate in an Ocean Institute educational program is able to despite any financial constraints.
The lack of funding in our school systems directly affects these students. The Ocean Institute's desired outcome for these underserved students is to create future stewards of our oceans and environment with an emphasis on continued education. In addition to an educational experience, all our field trips accomplish the following:
1. All educational programs meet CA State standards, which help improve test scores.
2. All programs teach math and science concepts that can be quickly grasped by students and are presented in the context of ocean science.
3. All programs teach cooperative learning abilities with a focus on communication and leadership.
4. The grant helps broaden participation in underserved students in the field of science, especially to minority students who are severely underrepresented in the sciences.
The timeline will be Spring 2015. A specific date will be assigned by the Ocean Institute when the school has selected their date to attend.
Rotarian involvement will be with at least 12 members of the San Clemente Sunrise Rotary participating in the outing on the RV Sea Explorer.
