Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Placentia, CA

Total Budget: $5,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: Lot 318 is a community based non-profit organization with focus on the education of at risk youth in the La Jolla district of Placentia, CA

The 50+ children of Lot 318 have been identified as at risk due to the socio-economic environment in which they reside. The director of Lot 318, Letty Gali, believes that education is the key to empowering these kids to achieving their worth and purpose to become positive role models and leaders in their community.

The Rotary Club of Placentia will be using grant funds to purchase and fill backpacks for the 2014-2015 school year, purchase clothing, shoes, and hygiene items. The club members will meet the Lot 318 kids and advisors at WalMart, where we will all shop for their school needs. In addition, the club members, along with the Valencia High School Interact Club, will assist in the after school homework and tutoring programs.

Lot 318 students participate in a homework club. They earn incentives that can be accrued and exchanged for a week trip to a local church camp over winter or summer break. The cost of camp is $250 per child. As part of our grant, we will provide 4 scholarships to send 4 kids to camp.

Our timeline for this project will commence immediately upon approval and continue through June 2015.

This project is important to our club because the NEED is in our own community. The funding of this grant will help build better lives in our own backyard.

Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)

We have been asked how we are going to publicize our event. We intend to publicize the event through the district website and if possible, with the Placentia News Times.

Since we will need chaperones for the event, we estimate at least 60% of our membership will be involved in the project. We will take the children to pick out their clothing. All will proceed to the checkout counter where the bill will be paid with one check from Lot 318 utilizing funds given to the them from the District Matching Grant Program.

We will be furnishing 50 backpacks and supplies to fill them at $30/ea($1500).

We will be purchasing school clothing for 50m children at $30/ea($1500).

Edit to camp - It will be winter 2014/2015 camp for 4 children also from La Jolla at $250/pp ($1000).

Lastly, we would like to furnish Lot 318 with 10 Barricades at $100/ea ($1000) to be used for events such as movie night, local soccer tournaments and the community Thanksgiving Dinner where they feed 2000 homeless and poor from the La Jolla are of Placentia.
