Project Description

Country: USA

Location: San Marcos California

Total Budget: $4,600

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: Provide 925 first grade students in California's San Marcos Unified School District with a free book.

Children from socio-economically disadvantaged homes have less access to books. This project is about providing books to the children of such homes. "A number of studies confirm that given access to comprehensible and interesting reading material, children and adolescents take advantage of them. More access to reading results in more reading" (Krashen, 2004). Providing children with a book that "is theirs" and the experience of having an adult (a Rotarian) read to them will reinforce the value of reading. It will also enhance the School District's existing quality literacy instruction. All first grade students in the School District's seven Title One Schools (approximately 925 students in 46 classrooms) will participate in the project; receiving a free book and being read to. This project involves not only money but also commitment and participation by Rotary members.
