California's Common Core State Standards address English language literacy and math standards in public schools. In the Third grade, reference work begins, and we will provide a dictionary to every third grade student (approximately 250)for his/her reference purposes. The project will also provide 14-15 iPad-type ChromeBooks to Fifth grade classrooms to be used by students who do not have a device of their own, for the school's pilot program with these devices to improve English language literacy and reading. Teachers will provide 1-on-1 instruction using the devices to access to electronic textbooks, primary research sources and for analysis and validation of information and sources. The Rotary Club and Interact Club of Laguna Beach, will place decals in each dictionary and each ChromeBook, and will use the District's buying power to purchase the dictionaries and iPads at reduced prices. All project funds go directly to the purchases for the affected students. Over 500 students will be assisted by the project, and many students cannot afford their own electronic device or reference materials, and the school district cannot provide such materials for them. This project provides 'equity' devices to the 5th grade classrooms for use by students who cannot provide their own, and individual reference books for each 3rd grade student.
