Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Treasure Valley, Idaho

Total Budget: $2,400

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: Scholarships to Idaho universities and colleges

The club has two literacy related projects viewed as a two-pronged approach. The first is to provide dictionaries to third graders in five low-income schools (approximately 450 students) in the West Ada school district of Idaho. For some of these students, this will be the only book they can call their own. The club will have a coordinator who makes contact with the schools to determine the number of dictionaries required to provide one dictionary per 3rd grade student, coordinate the distribution date for each school and order the dictionaries from the Dictionary Project organization. Upon receipt, several members will place Rotary bookplates in the front of the dictionaries. The bookplates will explain the community service mission of Rotary and include the four-way test. 90% of the club will participate in handing out the dictionaries at the schools and introducing the students to some basic information contained in them. We will take the opportunity to relate the members' professions with a commitment to and love for learning. We will also emphasize our desire and each person's obligation to give back to the community where we live. Our goal is to complete the distributions prior to Thanksgiving break. Anticipated cost is $900.

The second prong addresses Idaho's low percentage of graduating high school seniors who go on to college. Funds will be used to provide one freshman at each of Idaho's three state universities with a $500 scholarship, for a total cost of $1500. While each college will designate the individual who receives the scholarships, those students must meet criteria set by our club, that being a 3.0 minimum GPA, financial need and prior experience with community service. Providing these scholarships underscores our club belief in the importance of furthering education, recognizing community service of the recipients and encouraging young citizens of the state to excel. Both age groups in this project are at critical junctures for their education and future, and our club wants to provide direction and support. In addition, we are hopeful that this positive interaction with Rotary will be a catalyst for these young people to join a club early in their careers and to know the joys and benefits of giving. Scholarship funds will be provided to the universities in March 2015. School alumni in the club will act as coordinators with each of the universities.
