Project Description Country: USA Location: Pocatello Idaho Total Budget: $3,000 Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy Activity Type: Education: Literacy Summary: The Gate City Rotary club would like to purchase dictionaries to distribute to third grade students in Pocatello Idaho. The amount of success an individual has in their life depends greatly on the amount of success that individual has in their career. The amount of success an individual has in their career depends greatly on the amount of success they have gaining an education. The amount of success an individual has in gaining an education depends greatly on reading comprehension. Lastly, reading comprehension depends greatly on vocabulary skills developed at a young age. One need that we have identified is that far too many students in our area are testing less than proficient in reading and writing. An inability to read and write adequately will disqualify an individual from a college education and, thereby, better career opportunities. The Gate City Rotary club would like to distill in both faculty and students the importance of building a strong vocabulary in order to build communication, writing, and reading comprehension skills. We feel this can be accomplished by distibuting dictionaries to area grade schools by the latter part of October. The project funds will purchase the dictionaries and club members will present the dictionaries to the third grade students. Our club members will also emphasize the importance of using the dictionaries to help build a stronger vocabulary for success in academics, career, and overall communication with others.
