The Dental Program of St. Leo's Medical & Dental Facility began 23 years ago this month, its purpose being to serve the large population of poor living in the surrounding Barrio area of Solana Beach and Del Mar. The program began in a mobile dental vehicle from the Solana Beach Boys & Girls Club, later moving to a small facility in the St. James Church Hall; and later yet, with leadership from the Del Mar Rotary Club a new Dental Facility was built on land donated by St. James Church.
This present Dental Facility has 4 dental chairs and 2 x-ray machines, each servicing two chairs. On Saturdays, needy Latino children from ages 4 through high school are given full dental procedures. On Wednesdays, women from the Welcome Home Ministry are seen. These are released prisoners determined to be good Christian citizens -- proven by the low recidivism of only 5%-10%. (In comparison the other released prisoner recidivism is 70%!)
After x-rays are taken of the patient's teeth, the present x-ray developer produces an image about an inch square - i.e. very tiny.
With this District Grant, we propose to purchase a far superior imaging machine for use in the Dental Facility, one which has been researched and recommended for St. Leo's by their Dental Director, Honorary Del Mar Rotarian Bob Bobbitt DDS. The proposed digital x-ray developer will project the image on a large screen. Thus, the resulting dental evaluation made by the Dentist is significantly superior!
We are posting the quote and information of this Scan XSwift Phosphor Digital Imaging System on the document page.
Del Mar Rotarian Deacon Al Graff, a founder of the St. Leo's medical and dental program has recommended this Grant as a replacement for the $3,000 grant money awarded and received from the District in August for P-638, which we have asked to be withdrawn/deleted from the roster.
