This project targets six elementary schools in the Vista Unified School District which are designated as Title 1 and Program Improvement schools, AND have English proficiency scores under 50% (Beaumont, Bobier, Crestview, Foothill Oak, Grapevine, and Olive). First grade students in these schools will be the benificiaries of this program and grant.
Both the Superintendent of VUSD, Dr. Joyce Bales and the President of the School Board, Dr. Steven Lilly, are members of our Rotary Club and have stressed that reading is the single most important factor in the long term success of students. They have placed their personal and professional support behind this program.
Developing interest and competency in reading must start at an early age and our District boasts an extremely high percentage of English as a Second Language students, emphasizing the need to target very early grade levels. This grant, in combination with the discounted availability of books through Rolling Readers, will permit us to serve approximately 400 first grade students in the aforementioned six elementary schools.
Our small club is on target to sponsor two more Interact clubs this year, bringing the total to three. Our program will involve both Rotarians and Interactors in distributing books, and reading to the first grade students in these six schools.
It's important to note that another Title 1 elementary school in the City of Vista, Maryland Elementary, is the subject of a similar grant request by the Rotary Club of Vista (Project #P-68). We support them in their project and have not included this school in our program to prevent overlap.
