Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Rigby, Idaho

Total Budget: $10,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: Supply much needed computers and software for children in Jefferson County, Idaho schools

The need: When asked what the greatest need for their school was, most principals, teachers and parents in Jefferson School District 251 were loud and clear. "We need computer equipment and software." They are not asking for anything elaborate. All they are asking for is basics. They need to replace equipment and software that is so outdated that it is impossible to get support or maintenance for. In some cases there is nothing to replace because the school never had even rudimentary equipment to begin with.

Meeting the need: We will purchase $10,000 of the most needed equipment that will be used directly in the classroom or by individual students.

Timeline: We have pledges and gifts in hand for the Club's $5,000 commitment that we will receive upon approval of the District Grant and this project can be completed within 45 days of funding.

Use of Funds: The $10,000 will be expended exclusively on computer equipment and software that will be used in classrooms and directly by students. No funds will be spent on administrative or any other costs. The School District and Foundation will provide documentation to the Rigby Club and District 5400 to prove this use of the funds within 45 days of the receipt of the $10,000.

Club member involvement: K-12 education has been a major priority of the Rigby Rotary Club's philanthropic activity for the past several years. In fact, in the three years ended in December 2014 it is anticipated that the Rigby Rotary and/or individual Rotarians will have donated over $50,000 to the Jefferson District 251 Schools exclusive of this project. This project will involve at least four Rotarians who will work with District officials, Foundation Board Members and principals, teachers and parents to triage the long list of needs to make sure that the most important ones are addressed first. Rotarians will also assist in fund raising to fill the remaining computer and software needs.

Did you actually give cash to the school district, collected from the members, or did the club collect money from the members and write a check to the school district. If a check, please upload a copy of the cancelled check.

14-Jan-16

by Mike Byrne

Donations from members was given directly to a special account at the Jefferson School District Foundation by the members. There was no check from the Rotary Club involved. This allowed the members to receive a tax deduction. The Rigby Rotary Club is not a 501c3 and does not have its own Foundation.
