Clark County School District is tremendously under-funded in terms of providing the necessary tools for children to learn the basics of English, spelling and definitions. Annually, we have provided dictionaries and thesaurus' to 5th or 6th grade students at Laughlin elementary or junior high school students. We are the ONLY source for these youngsters to receive these valuable tools to enhance their education in the area of English composition, spelling, definitions and sentence structure.
This year we have a new school principal that is dedicated to advancing the education of pre-school students as well as the youngsters about to enter high school. We are dedicated to our youth! It is now our intent to provide pre-school reading materials as well as dictionaries and thesaurus' to 1st, 5th and 8th grade students. Each book will be geared to the appropriate grade level. This project will benefit at least 240 students and more as they hand down their books to their brothers and sisters. And then, the cycle begins again.
Should the application be approved, educational reading comprehension books will be provided to at least 240 students in Laughlin, Nevada, USA.
We are in rural southern Nevada at the California, Nevada, Arizona border where we only have two schools; one elementary and one junior/senior high school with a student population of around 650 combined. A month ago, we became blessed with an absolutely wonderful principal in Dawn Estes. She has been the elementary school principal for quite some time but something really great happened just a month ago; Dawn was named principal of both the elementary and high school facilities and the whole school program here has changed to K-12. She has a tremendous feel for starting education of our youth at a younger age (pre-kindergarten)but does not have the budget to do so. So, this is a last minute surge to get the reading materials out to the students that need them most. Our budget has been set for the past several years to provide books to just one level (5th or 6th grade). Now we need to take on four levels on a one-level budget. We are a club of 12 Rotarians who do our best to bring in the funds for our youth but now we need your help to reach the next level and we are trying to prepare our students for their next level of education and help them be properly prepared to face the challenge.
We CAN meet the District deadline for reporting, etc. We set this into motion already by purchasing the books. Now we need your backing to help us cover our obligation to our youth.
