Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Elmore County, Idaho

Total Budget: $2,700

Areas of Focus: Basic education and literacy, Economic and community development

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: Develop and maintain school supply closets in 8 schools

Approximately 60% of the students in the Mountain Home, Glenns Ferry and Bruneau School Districts live below the poverty level. Children arrive at school lacking the basic school supplies and often inadequate clothing. Teachers often dip into their own wallets to provide for these children and understand that children without the basic necessities struggle to succeed in the school environment. We propose to establish and maintain school supply closets in 8 schools that teachers can access for these children. The supplies will include not only paper and pens but underwear, socks, shirts, and basic hygiene items. The club members will work directly with the schools to supply these closets and will purchase the items requested. We will have the closets established in time to the 2015-16 school year and will resupply the closets throughout the academic year.

Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)

We have a Rotarian who will spearhead the project for the club. Contract with the schools will occur in early August prior to the kids returning to school. We have our portion of the funding allocated in our budget.

We have spent $2109 so far on school supplies, needed clothing, and chrome books for the technology departments. All of the items bought were specifically requested by the teachers for their needy children. This provided supplies to 5 elementary schools, two middle schools and three high schools in three different school districts. We have plans to spend the remaining money in the next two months filling requests.

We have been in touch with the schools and will be focusing our initial efforts on a school for at risk teens in Mountain Home. The teachers have requested a food pantry for these students so we are working at sending non perishable food items to a modified food locker . We will then contact the other schools to get supplies to them
