Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Anchorage, Alaska

Total Budget: $1,500

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: Five Little Free Libraries will be installed to benifit 20 or more children and adults per site per day.

Not everyone has ready access to the public libraries, particularly with the closure of some smaller satellite libraries. Furthermore, there is little fellowship in many communities due to the lack of community events. This project will provide ready access to books within walking distance of 100 people or more per site. The take a book, leave a book, approach allows people to meet others and learn their interests which promotes fellowship and goodwill. The Little Free Library project supports education and literacy on a community level. The project was started by Rotarian Todd Bol in 2009 in Wisconsin and it has spread worldwide1. The grant funds will be used exclusively for construction materials, registration with Little Free Library 2, and Rotary branding. The libraries will be designed, constructed and installed by Rotarians, and friends of Rotarians, who will donate their time and tools. The club will donate books and solicit book donations from others to initially stock the libraries. The library stock should be sustained in the future by the users. The club will check the condition of the libraries on a regular basis and make repair as necessary.

A short overview of the project will be presented at the District Conference. A new photo showing the Rotary Branding has been added.
