Project Description Country: USA Location: Homer AK Total Budget: $2,110 Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy Activity Type: Education: Literacy Summary: Ten small libraries placed in public gathering places for youth and adults in Homer Alaska. We will install small libraries throught the community in public gathering places. Sites will include: coffee shops; teen centers; computer cafes; hospital; child and adult advocacy center; behavioral health center; and some neighborhood yards. Books will be made available free of charge to whoever wants one, and will include both fiction and non-fiction. Users will be encouraged to replace the books they take to keep the library full and functioning. Grant monies will be spent on constructing or buying bookshelves of varying sizes, and the purcchase of books for the initial stocking. We anticipate this project will function as an ongoing community project for our club, as we continually monitor the libraries for inappropriate material and completeness. In the event that we construct shelves we may also provide a learning experience for local teens. Books will be recommended by club members and local library staff.
