Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Fairbanks, Alaska

Total Budget: $60,000

Area of Focus: Economic and community development

Activity Type: Community Development: General

Summary: The goal is to build a Rotary Park on a peninsula in the Tanana Lakes Recreation Area with pavilions for picnicking and small playgrounds with equipment for all ages encircled by a natural walking trail with benches along the route.

This is a multi-year project to build a fully accessible Rotary Play Park in Fairbanks for all ages. The park will be on a peninsula of land across from the swim beach in the non-motorized portion of the Tanana Lakes Recreation Area between South Lathrop Street and South Cushman Street. The park will preserve the natural conditions of the area as much as possible, including a nature walking path with benches. The final park will have approximately 4 pavilions/gazebos for picnics and parties as well as 13 individual playgrounds with equipment for all ages. The main walking path down the middle that connects the gazebos and playgrounds will be fully handicap accessible. There will be 21 parking spaces and 2 ADA spaces with a new gravel parking lot at the front of the park.

This area is part of the new Tanana Lakes Recreation Area that is currently being developed in sections and we will be partnering with the Fairbanks North Star Borough. There is not currently a park in Fairbanks that provides picnic, playground, and trails for all ages all in one close area, especially with swimming and non-morotized boating also available. The new parking area is much needed to move current parking off the roadside.

The plan is to complete the park in 4 phases. Phase I will be completed in 2015-2016 and include the parking area, all the dirt work and clearing for the trails, gazebos, and playgrounds. Rotarians and friends will do all the labor, including operating the equipment, clearing the area and underbrush for the trails, playgrounds, and gazebos, and spreading the gravel and recycled asphalt for the parking areas and main trail. As much as possible, the cleared brush will be chipped and used as the surface for the nature walking trail. The project funds will be used to purchase the recycled asphalt for the main trail and the playgrounds, the signage, the D1 gravel for the parking lot, paint, and pipe for storm drainage. It is anticipated that some of the materials will be donated and that we can raise some funds with bench sponsorships.

Due to permitting delays, we are behind schedule. We hope to break ground on the parking area around July 11th, weather permitting. Once the contractor is on-site, we hope to be able to purchase the culverts and any other items needed for the parking area to complete the 2015-2016 grant requirements by the end of July or August of this year.

In anticipation of the weather finally allowing the parking area to be completed, the culverts, timbers, and entrance sign have been purchased for installation with the construction of the parking area, expending the balance of the 2015-2016 grant funds for Phase I of the Rotary Play Park.
