Summary: Kids Read at Osborn School District


Kids Read is an established project at the Osborn School District. Approximately 90% of the children attending Osborn live below the poverty line. Studies suggest a child raised in poverty will hear 30 million fewer spoken words by the time they start school than children in more affluent circumstances. Kids Read combines adult volunteers (Rotarians) to read to 3rd grade children in a school setting and also provides children the opportunity to own a book - in many instances the only book in that home. By reading out loud to children they improve their vocabulary and we begin to develop a life long joy for reading and information. Kids Read also includes the participation of parents in before school reading session where a volunteer reads and parents and students both listen. The funds from this project request will be spent on purchasing books. All overhead and related costs are borne by the School District, The Rotary Club of Phoenix and volunteers.

The budget is based on providing a book to 60% of the 3rd grade students, since participation is voluntary. The budget anticipates purchasing hard back or firm back books, but if there is more demand, we may mix in some paperback books.
