Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Mat Su Borough AK

Total Budget: $2,770

Areas of Focus: Water and sanitation, Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: Distribution of children's book 'Josh the Baby Otter' to kindergarten and pre-schools around the valley.

The book "Josh the Baby Otter' will be distributed to at least 15 elementary schools around the Mat Su Valley. The distribution will consist of reading the book in an assembly setting or in classrooms. Children will be asked to take a Water Safety pledge and receive a book with the Rotary Four Way Test Sticker, a coloring book, a CD with songs and readings a Water Safety sticker and when available, a visit from a costumed mascot, Josh.

The project will most likely have to be accomplished in the fall of 2015 due to timing. The project at any rate will be fulfilled by DEC 2015.

The CDC lists drowning as the number one cause of accidental death for children 1-4.

"Nearly 80% of people who die from drowning are male. In 2009, among children 1 to 4 years old who died from an unintentional injury, more than 30% died from drowning... Drowning is responsible for more deaths among children 1-4 than any other cause except congenital anomalies,(birth defects). Among those 1-14, fatal drowning remains the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related death behind motor vehicle crashes." Downing is preventable. Of the steps to prevent drowning, building awareness is critical. Individuals, families and the community at large can use this basic information. By distributing the book we reach even more children that are at home and adults who will read to them. We are anticipating distribution to 200 children in 2015 alone. Members of Susitna Rotary along with fellow Rotarian's in the valley and other volunteers will allow a broader reach to the children.

We plan to enlist all valley clubs in this project and also wish to provide some life jackets in conjunction with the Kids Don't Float program. We are requesting extra funds, $2000.00 for this purchase.
