Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Arizona

Total Budget: $2,000

Areas of Focus: Maternal and child health, Economic and community development

Activity Type: Health: General

Summary: Indestructible soccer balls provided to needy/deserving children within the boundaries of Rotary District 5490.

I. Identification of Need:

a) Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years.

b) The percentage of children aged 6-11 years in the United States who were obese increased from 7% in 1980 to nearly 18% in 2012. Similarly, the percentage of adolescents aged 12-19 years who were obese increased from 5% to nearly 21% over the same period.

c) In 2012, more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese.

[a,b, and c:(http://www.cdc.gov/healthyyouth/obesity/facts.htm)]

d) Children have the right to relax and play, and to join in a wide range of cultural, artistic and other recreational activities(http://www.unicef.org/crc/files/Rights_overview.pdf)

e)Participating in physical activity is positively related to outcomes including

academic achievement, academic behaviors, and indicators of cognitive skills and attitudes, such as concentration, memory, self-esteem, and verbal skills.

There is a need to promote a less sedentary lifestyle among children and adolescents, and to promote increased physical activity. The social, emotional, and physical benefits of physical activity are numerous, and apply to both individuals and society as a whole. Children have a right to enjoy their childhood. Play is part and parcel of that right.

II. How Project Will Meet Identified Needs:

The project will meet the identified need by promoting a healthy lifestyle among children and adolescents.

III. Timeline

The project will be completed during the 2015-16 Rotary year. This includes both the purchase and the distribution of the balls to recipients.

IV. Specific Use of Project Funds

The funds will be used to purchase indestructible soccer balls through either the One World Play Project's "Buy One - Give One" program (i.e. for every ball purchased, another ball will be sent by One World Play Project to a worthy organization of our choosing), or the "Bulk Purchase" program. Shipping, handling, and applicable taxes will also be paid from project funds. (see http://www.oneworldplayproject.com/product/buy-one-give-one/ for detailed information)

V. How Club Members Will Be Involved

Phoenix Rotary 100 members will partner with the Central High School Interact Club to distribute the balls to worthy recipients. These may include schools, family shelters, after-school programs, etc.
