Project Description Country: USA Location: Buckeye Arizona Total Budget: $925 Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy Activity Type: Education: Literacy Summary: providing weekly readers for 5th and 6th graders with science spin at Buckeye Elementary School. there are a 105 students per grade level Providing weekly readers for the students increases their awareness of current events, geography and literacy. BES is a 90% free and reduced lunch school. The students are given the materials after they are reviewed to take home and any many cases this is the only reading material in the home. The expansion to provide these materials for the 5th and 6th grade levels is a request of the principle (a rotarian). The program is fully endorsed by the staff and school board. Rotarians will visit the class rooms at all levels when the materials are being presented. A follow up article will appear in the Buckeye Valley News our local paper. Because of our involvement with the school we are invited to read to the classrooms for Dr Suess' birthday. The distribution of weekly readers starts the 2nd week of school aproximately mid August.
